PLACEMAKING IN WADI IL JOZ تصميم الحيز/PLACEMAKING في وادي الجوز
Wadi il Joz is an Arab neighborhood in East Jerusalem, located near the old city. Like most Arab areas in East Jerusalem, it is characterized by a high density rate and acute shortage in open public spaces and parks. Accordingly, residents do not have sufficient access to public spaces. When we started our Placemaking internship in 2016, we decided to develop a small public space used as a neglected pathway. Permanently walled by a private area on one side, it appeared as a grim, unloved space.

The Placemaking approach guided us to begin our work by looking for partners, and we reached out to the local community center and the residents. The involvement of the community center helped to encourage community participation, since residents felt more comfortable with the presence of a local institution that they viewed as familiar and trust worthy.
نهج أو مبدا هذا المشروع يعتمد على العمل مع عده شركاء لذلك سعينا ونجحنا في الوصول الى المركز المجتمعي المحلي وأيضا الى سكان الحي. ساعد إشراك المركز المجتمعي على تشجيع المشاركة المجتمعية للسكان، حيث شعر السكان براحة مع وجود مؤسسة محلية التي يرون أنها مألوفة وجديرة بالثقة.
The Placemaking approach also highlighted the key role of residents in the process. A participatory workshop handed the people the right to shape their own environment. It gave them the opportunity to be a part of the decision making process, and provided them with a platform to express their ideas, feelings and creativity to form a vision that balanced different desires and needs, grounded in the real challenges and opportunities that exist in the space. For example, during the workshop many residents advanced the idea that the main goal of the intervention should be to create a safe and pleasant space for local children, who have no place to play and gather but the streets. Focusing on the residents' perspective also served to heighten their sense of responsibility and belonging to the place.
سلط المشروع الضوء على اهميه دور السكان في صنع الحيز الذي يسكنون فيه. تم عقد ورشة عمل سلمت للسكان الحق في إعطاء اقتراحاتهم في عمليه التصميم لتاكيد على ان السكان هم الجزء الاهم في عملية صنع القرار. قدمت لهم الورشة منبرا للتعبير عن افكارهم ومشاعرهم واقتراح رؤية ابداعيه تعبر عن رغبات المجتمع واحتياجاته متحدين جميع الصعوبات الموجودة في الواقع. على سبيل المثال، خلال ورشة العمل العديد من السكان عبروا عن أن الهدف الرئيسي من التدخل او التصميم يجب أن يكون لخلق مساحة آمنة وممتعة للأطفال الحي، الذين ليس لديهم مكان للعب والتجمع غير الشوارع. التركيز على راي المجتمع من شانه تعزيز الشعور في المسؤولية والانتماء إلى المكان.
While this was only a pilot project, not yet completed, we feel that Placemaking projects hold great potential for high density conflicted areas. Since the allocation of large public spaces is a prolonged and complex process, the tools to create small yet active and creative public areas are effective for initiating short-term spatial improvements. Those spaces can be transformed into important places for community gathering and neighborhood activism. Hopefully, this could contribute to the community resilience of Wadi il Joz, as well as to future spatial and social planning in the neighborhood.
في حين كان هذا المشروع فقط مشروع تجريبي لم يكتمل بعد، لكن نحن نرى أن المشاريع البلايسميكنج لها القدرة والإمكانات على تقديم حلول للمناطق المعقدة وذات الكثافة العالية. عمليه تخصيص أماكن عامه ذات مساحة كبيره في القدس الشرقية هي عمليه صعبه جدا وفي بعض الأحيان شبه مستحيلة، لذلك تم اللجوء الى التفكير في تصميم أماكن عامه من خلال تحويل مساحات صغيره الى مساحات ابداعيه عامه. على الرغم من صغرها الا ان لها دور كبير في تحسين الحيز. هذه المساحات الصغيرة الإبداعية يمكن تحويلها الى أماكن تجمع ونشاط لسكان الحي. نأمل ان يساعد هذا المشروع على اهميه دور المشاركة المجتمعية في عمليه التصميم و التخطيط المكاني.

هيا ماني
The Jerusalem fellowship is a pilot project of the urban clinic, the Jerusalem municipality, "Eden" Corporation for the development of the center of Jerusalem and community councils, meant to transform four anonymous and neglected public spaces to vibrant and beloved places in four Jerusalem neighborhoods using social, cultural and physical interventions. During 2016, 8 graduate students from HUJI, Betzalel and the Technion received scholarships in order to work in teams in diverse residential settings across Jerusalem: the Ultra-Orthodox Bucharim, Palestinian vadi-joz, and mixed Musrara and Nachlaot neighborhoods. Together with residents, social organizations and local businesses, the students are composing a short and long term plan to advance a positive transformation of the public space, for the well being of the local community.
As part of the project, placemaking tools were translated to Arabic and Hebrew for use in the Israeli context.

مشروع زمالة القدس هو مشروع تجريبي للعيادة الحضرية ، بلدية القدس و شركه "عدن" لتطوير وسط مدينة القدس والمجالس المحلية. هدف المشروع تحويل الأماكن العامة المجهولة والمهملة إلى أماكن حيوية وفعاله في أربعة أحياء في القدس من خلال التدخلات الاجتماعية والثقافية والمادية. خلال عام 2016، تلقى 8 طلاب الدراسات العليا من اجامعه العبرية والتخنيون و بتسلئيل على منح دراسيه من أجل العمل في فرق في الحياء السكنية المتنوعة في القدس منها حي البوخاريم الأرثوذكسي , حي وادي الجوز الفلسطيني العربي و حي المصراره المختلط و حي النخلئوت .عمل الطلاب جنبا الى جنب مع السكان و المؤسسات الاجتماعية و الشركات المحلية . أيضا يعمل الطلاب على انشاء خطط قصيره و طويله المدى للحث على تغيير إيجابي في الفضاء العام من اجل المنفعة العامة للمجتمع.
